water softener update July 2008: California May be Poised to Pass Softener
Ban Law AB 2270 passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee
by party line vote on July 7. A law allowing water softener bans
is expected to pass the California Senate as early as the week
of July 14 and move to Gov. Arnold Scharzenegger’s desk.
The bill, AB 2270, passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee
by party line vote July 7. The State Water Resources Control
Board told the legislature that bans will not cost state government
significant amounts of money. However, the law could cost homeowners
untold sums, according to the Water Quality Association (WQA).
“Those in the industry and homeowners need to make sure
the governor knows how damaging this law would be,” said
Peter Censky, executive director of the WQA. “This drastic
bill would do very little good for the environment and cause
a lot of problems for homeowners throughout California.”
The bill gives unelected water boards the power to decide
whether California towns can ban softeners. If a town chooses
to announce a ban, policing power to enforce it would be necessary.

What is Hard
Water ?
Answer: The term
hardness refers to the quantity of dissolved calcium and magnesium
in water. These minerals, which come primarily from limestone
type rock formations, are found to some degree in almost all
natural waters. Calcium and magnesium cause problems for two
principal reasons:
When the water
is warmed, they precipitate out of solution and form a hard,
rock-like scale. This scale accelerates corrosion, restricts
flow, and reduces heat transfer in water heaters and boilers.
When they combine with soap, they react to form a curd, which
interferes with cleaning, dries out skin, and leaves deposits
on plumbing and clothes (bathtub ring; ring around the collar).
The minerals in hard water gradually settle out forming a hard
scale. Scale centimeters thick can build up over time in hard
water areas. Scale build up will eventually clog pipe, and can
decrease the life of toilet flushing units by 70 percent and
water faucets by 40 percent according to a report published by
the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Hardness scale can
also shorten life of washing equipment, dishwashers, and clothes
washers by as much as 30 percent according to the AWWA report.
Hardness is measured
in parts per million (or the equivalent mg/L) or in grains per
gallon (gpg). Note: if the water analysis is given in ppm as
CaCO3 then 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm. There is no established limit for
the acceptable level of hardness in water, but it is generally
considered to become problematic at around 3 gpg.
Levels of hardness
are referred to as follows:
Soft Water: 0
- 1 grains per gallon (gpg)
Slightly Hard Water: 1 - 4 grains per gallon (gpg)
Moderately Hard Water: 4 - 7 grains per gallon (gpg)
Hard Water: 7 - 10 grains per gallon (gpg)
Very Hard Water: Over 10 grains per gallon (gpg)
1. How does
the Whole House No-Salt RDWS-Platinum Package work?
First, water
enters the pre-sediment filter system to remove sediment, rust,
dirt and debris. Second, clean water now enters the Scalenet
hard water scale prevention media. This media transforms calcium
ions (hard water) into calcium crystals , which are stable and
cannot attach to pipes, surfaces, hardware, or heat exchanger
components. These crystals are so small they are easily rinsed
away by water flow. Note: this is not a spot free system - A
simple damp cloth (if at all) is more than sufficient to remove
any residual mineral deposits. Third, chlorine bad tastes and
odors are filtered through our a 0.6um micron carbon filtration
system "The Chlorine Taste and Odor Guzzler" to provide
whole house drinking water filtration. Fourth and lasty, the
water is treated through a NSF Certified non-chemical ultraviolet
uv water treatment system.
2. Is the
RDWS-Platinum Package a Water Softener ?
No. To "soften
water" you actually have to remove the calcium and magnesium
hard water minerals. The RDWS-Platinum Package does not remove
the calcium or magnesium. These systems are alternatives to salt
based water softeners and perfect for customers who live in banned
water softener areas or just want to Go Green ! The ScaleNet
media transforms calcium ions (hard water) into calcium crystals
, which are stable and cannot attach to pipes, surfaces, hardware,
or heat exchanger components.
3. I see other
companies advertising similar systems calling them "saltfee
water softeners" no-salt water softeners" and "saltless
water softeners" why don't you?
We choose to
sell our non-salt whole house water conditioners the proper way
by not calling them "water softners" and want you to
know that your water will not be soft. To call these types of
systems "water softeners" is simply misleading!! Furthermore,
non-salt hard water treatments, such as Magnets, Filtersorb SP,
Coils, Anodes, Conditioning Modules, etc. do not remove the hard
water minerals of calcium or magnesium. In other words, your
water will not test soft after using these types of systems.
Companies advertising these systems as "true water softeners"
are simply confusing the consumer. Furthermore, there are
no "no salt water softeners" that have been NSF or
WQA tested certified to soften water ! If you are looking
for an environmentally friendly non-salt hard water conditioner
to reduce the effects of hard water scale and provide NSF Certified
uv treatment as well as whole house filtered water we feel our
RDWS-Platinum Package is the best on the market - Period!!
4. Are your
RDWS-Platinum Packages environmentally friendly?
Yes. These systems
do not require any chemical additives, no brine water discharge
or backwash water, no control valve, no drainline, no waste water,
no salt, saves water !
5. Will your
RDWS-Platinum Package provide whole house drinking water filtration?
Yes. Our RDWS-Plainum
Package offers whole house sediment, rust, and larger debris
filtration as well as whole house NSF Certified chlorine tastes

6. Will the
conditioned water make me feel slimy?
No. there will
not be the slippery feel on your skin when you shower or bathe.
This feel comes from the sodium reacting with your body oils.

sources?
No. The RDWS-Platinum
Package is designed to treat hard water up to 25gpg water hardness,
sediment, rust, chlorine bad tastes and odors typically associated
with city municipal water sources.
8. What type
of maintenance can I expect to have with your RDWS-Platinum Package?

9. I have
seen other UV systems that are not NSF Certified. Is the SPV-15
UV system certified?
Yes. If you are
looking for an independently certified UV treatment system, then

SPV-15 carries NSF/ANSI Standard 55, Class A certification and
provides a flow rate of 15.0 gpm (56.8 lpm) at a validated dose
of 40 mJ/cm2. The SPV-15 is ideally suited for high-flow, point-of-entry
applications such as the whole home treatment of a large home,
cottage, campground, etc. install at the point of entry, all
the water in the facility, including the hot water will receive
treated water. These units are ideal for use in any treatment
application where a third-party validated unit is specified.
This Ultraviolet
UV system comes with the feature-laden Platinum™ controller
coupled with the Flow-Pace™ UV intensity monitor. This combination
allows for 2-stage flow pacing whereby half-power is provided
to the lamps in conditions of no flow and full-power when the
water is running. This allows the system to operate with minimal
power requirements and reduced heat build-up. The Platinum™
controller provides constant output current and a universal power
input (100-250V./50-60Hz.), as well as visually displaying %
UV intensity, remaining lamp life and total hours of operation.
Using high-output, Sterilume™-HO coated low pressure germicidal
UV lamps coupled with 316L stainless steel, axial flow reactors,
the Platinum systems offer a compact installation footprint,
yet provides a high flow throughput.
